A new study reveals that about 10% of Alzheimer's cases exhibit early visual disturbances known as posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). These disturbances, such as difficulties in visual tasks, precede the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Analyzing data from over 1,000 patients, researchers found that 94% of individuals experiencing PCA went on to develop Alzheimer's. Recognizing PCA early could aid in timely treatment and potentially benefit from recently approved Alzheimer's medications targeting tau protein accumulation in the brain.
